Wifi is an abbreviated form of Wireless Fidelity but some say its a misconception. It can be used within a fixed location. It can be connected through a router, phone, or computer.

Wi-Fi networks have no physical wired connection between the sender and the receiver. The organization which is the owner of the registered trademark term defines Wi-Fi as any wireless local area network (WLAN) products that are based on the Institute of “Electrical and Electronics Engineers” (IEEE) 802.11 standards.

How To Change Your Wifi Password

Wi-Fi is great for keeping you connected to the internet, but a poorly secured Wi-Fi conne16ction can put your personal data at high risk.

You need to keep your password protected and you always need to change your password. It is a very important factor to protect your network and your personal data.

If you want to keep your cheap neighbors away, keep changing your password from time to time. If you want to change your Wi-Fi password, for th16at you will need to open your router’s configuration page, log in using your current details, and change the password under the wireless settings menu.

Steps To Change Wifi Password

1. Open your router’s configuration page

You can access the configuration page of your router through a web browser on a computer connected to your network. If you can’t connect with Wi-Fi because you don’t know the password, use a cable to connect your computer directly to the router.

  • The Standard router addresses are,,,, or (Xfinity), or (Apple). Enter the address into your browser’s address bar.

  • If none of the addresses give you access to the configuration page, open the Command Prompt by pressing the Windows key + R and entering cmd. or type run in the search bar and search cmd.
  • Once the Command Prompt opens, type IP config and press Enter. Look for the active connection in the list and find the Default Gateway address. Now, this is your router address.
  • If this fails, press and hold the Reset button on your router for 30 to 35 seconds to revert it to factory default settings. Now, look up the default address for that router model and enter it into your browser.
  • Some routers come with configuration software. If you’ve already installed your configuration software, you can use that instead of the web browser interface.

2. Enter Your Router’s Username and Password

Every router requires a username and password before you can access the innards. If you have never changed this when you configured the router for the first time, chances are that the username is “admin” or “userAdmin” and the password is “admin”, “password” or your current Wi-Fi’s password.

This varies from model to model, so you should search your model online to see what is your exact login info.

If you have changed the login previously, and since you forgot it, or received the router as a hand-me-down and the previous owner didn’t reset it, you’ll need to press and hold the Reset button on the router for 30 to 35 seconds.

This will now reset the settings to default, allowing you to log in with the default username and password.

3. Open the Wireless section

Once you have successfully logged into your router, you’ll need to find the Wireless section of the configuration page. The exact name will change from manufacturer to manufacturer, but generally, you are looking for a “Wireless” Setup” tab or button.

If your “Wireless” section contains multiple sub-sections, open the Wireless Security page.

4. Change the Password

Now, look for the box labeled “Password”, “Passphrase” or “Shared Key”. You can now enter your new password into this box. Some routers will ask you to type the password again to ensure that you entered it correctly.

You need to create a strong password that would be much difficult if not impossible to guess. Remember it should not be related to anything personal and should include some numbers, random cases, and special characters such as “!”, “$” and “#”.

A strong password is generally at least 8 characters long.

5. Check out your Security Type

There are mainly three types of wireless encryptions: WPA, WEP, and WPA2. For the highest secure network, you should be using WPA2.

You may run into issues connecting older devices, however, in some cases, you could switch to WPA or WPA/WPA2. Selecting WEP is not recommended, as WEP encryption is very easy to break (it can take almost 30 minutes to crack a WEP password).

6. Change your Network Name

While you are here, take a moment to change your ‘network name’ if you have not already.

The name should not include any personal information, as the name will be publicly broadcasted. Changing the name will discourage people from trying to break into it.

Routers with common names are easy to hack.

7. Save your Settings

Once you are done with entering your new password, click Apply or Save button. The button is located different for every router but, is typically located at the top or bottom of the page.

The router will take a few moments to make the change, at this point any devices currently connected would be disconnected.

After you change the settings, you can now connect to your wireless network using your new password.
